Our credentials

BT understands the complex and changing environment where our customers operate – where the nature of the threat has evolved from traditional conflict between states to combating global terrorism. The scale and nature of activities has exceeded predicted levels. This inevitably leads to increased requirements for operational capability and accurate, timely information – which is managed securely and available to all who need it.

BT is a key element of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure and works closely with the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI). In addition, BT is a key contributor to the UK Government’s joint task force on cyber defence.  Our long history of working with the Government enables BT to rise to the challenges facing its customers.

We operate one of the largest dedicated security and business continuity practices in the world

  • we have in excess of 1,500 practitioners
  • our Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) monitors and responds to global threat alerts
  • we’re an active member of FIRST (Forum of Incident Response & Security Teams)
  • we use systems and processes accredited to BS20111, ISO 27001, ISO 17799 and other industry standards
  • we invest millions in security-related R&D every year and have 100 registered patents and 190 published security papers
  • we have over a decade of experience in providing more than 860 Managed Security Services (MSS) to customers across the globe
  • we take full responsibility for managing or monitoring over 335,000 devices globally

We invest millions to turn the innovations we think have the most potential into everyday realities, and we spent almost £800 million on research and development in 2010.  For example we’re developing new capabilities to protect ourselves and our customers from the growing cyber threat.

Employing more than 1,300 security professionals worldwide, BT holds security accreditations from trusted organisations such as FIRST, CERT, FIPS, and NSA – and uses systems and processes accredited to BS20111, ISO 27001, ISO 17799 and other industry standards.

We’re constantly looking ahead, developing products and services to meet customers’ future needs.  One example is the Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) project delivered by BT for the UK MOD.  It’s recognised as delivering value for money by the Treasury, and prices are regularly checked and negotiated as part of the ongoing agreement.  The DFTS network is special – no other organisation has one like it:

  • it’s built on tried and tested, accredited technology
  • it’s fully secure. No extra layers and no need for encryption at RESTRICTED level (IL3)
  • we’re experts in network security
  • DFTS has 17 full and 16 interim CESG accreditations
  • our services have been tried and tested by the MOD since 1997
  • our enterprise-wide security wrap is outstanding.  Securing all your information, whatever the content.

We have also transformed our organisation following the financial crisis. In just one year:

  • conferencing saved us £111 million in travel and subsistence expenses, while freeing time worth at least £71 million for more productive use
  • we made our people more productive and slashed our total underlying costs by £1.8 billion in 2009/10
  • we have retained our employees and improved customer service levels.  As a result our organisation is more efficient and profitable again
  • we are now sharing BT’s experience with our customers to assist them in their cost-reduction challenges.

BT is one of the few organisations in the world that has the flexibility and reach required to serve an organisation like yours.
