Efficiency used to be about how much and how quickly people worked.
Today, efficiency is about not just how well people work, but how well they are able to use the information and communication technologies at their disposal.
Cloud-based services such as virtual data centres have prompted much excitement because they promise much:
• Cost reduction thanks to the ability to pay for just the processing power, storage and applications you need instead of investing heavily in a complex infrastructure
• The flexibility to scale services up and down on demand
• A reduction of risks associated with IT infrastructure service failure
But they are only as efficient as the underlying network.
After all the hype surrounding the cloud and enablers such as virtualisation, it’s time to bring it back and remember that there are two sides to the efficiency coin.
