Cutting through the clouds

This month’s episodes of Top Tips for CIOs bring you expert views from BT specialists on a variety of topics related to the cloud computing debate.

We kick off with Solution Specialist Ed Hoppitt, whose interview is a companion piece to our new white paper on bursting the cloud of hype in the industry.  Hoppitt thinks cloud computing is nearing the peak of its hype cycle, with more marketing than common sense dominating some discussions. He suggests going back to basics, thinking hard about regulation, business requirements and service issues.

IT Services Programme Director Neil Lock then takes us into detail of the reality of cloud computing today.  Risk, criticality of applications, speed and service levels each vary according to the type of cloud computing in operation.  Lock explains the difference between types, then goes on to explore how a hybrid of public and private cloud can offer an elegant solution.
BT believes that data centre management is one of the keys to cloud success.  Cloud-based networks can set you free ... IF you have the right infrastructure behind them.  Hoppitt returns to discuss  how data centres fit into the picture, and what questions a CIO must ask to ensure a resilient infrastructure.

Finally Neil Sutton, BT’s vice president of portfolio management, dives into the detail of how data centre virtualisation can deliver 30 per cent efficiency gains.  Data centres are the hub of the system that delivers end applications to IT users, and critical to any attempt to deliver both flexibility and reliability through a cloud.
