Technology is the answer to reduced budgets

Technology is the answer to the expected 10-15% budget cuts
The prospect of budget cuts is one that local authorities have to take very seriously. With talk of cuts of up to 30%, everyone is looking at practical solutions to help. Increased productivity of public services is key to ensuring local authorities cope with the long-term squeeze on spending and emerge more effective for the future needs placed upon them. Technology provides a considerable enabler to deliver these efficiencies and enables local authorities to focus their efforts where is matters – on providing the services their citizens need. BT’s Chris Ainslie explains more in this video.

How BT can help
Over the past two decades, BT has been working with councils to transform the way in which they deliver services. Our Strategic Partnerships have achieved efficiency improvements worth several hundred million pounds and performance has improved in a host of key areas – sometimes spectacularly so.  For instance:

  • Liverpool City Council – £100million savings over five years have been ploughed back to improve core services.
  • The City of Edinburgh – £30million has been used to minimise increases in Council Tax payments.
  • Suffolk County Council – Office accommodation costs were reduced by £600,000 per annum by introducing hot-desking and other forms of flexible working.
  • Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council – The e-procurement system we built is expected to save £30million over 12years by centralising purchasing, streamlining business processes and eliminating delays.

Services have been improved too:

  • 97% of the enquiries Liverpool City Council receives are now dealt with at the first point of contact.  The number of complaints received as a result of poor service has reduced by 76%.
  • In Suffolk, Customer Service Direct has delivered similar results. The number of enquiries resolved at the first point of contact has been increased from 60 to 80 per cent.

BT has delivered these savings and performance improvements by modernising communications and IT systems, redesigning and reengineering back-office business processes to exploit the new technical infrastructure to the full.
