The City of Edinburgh Council: Swift project becomes the catalyst for joined-up social care

In April 2001 The City of Edinburgh Council selected BT as its strategic partner to jointly develop the Smart City vision, which aims to change the way the Council organises and delivers citizen-centric services – making them more efficient, effective and customer focused. A wide range of improvement projects has been established and over £15 million is being invested in replacing and enhancing the IT infrastructure with modern systems and software designed to help deliver the vision.

One of the most significant projects is the Social Work Systems Modernisation Project, known as ‘Swift’. This focuses on changing the way that social work practitioners, administrative and support staff go about their work and aims to increase communication effectiveness between social workers and agencies. Swift is also aiming to bring a consistent approach to business processes and provide a case recording system that improves the way services are provided to customers.

“I have received very positive feedback from staff on the smooth implementation of Swift. Given the scale of the project this is a significant achievement. This success is undoubtedly due to the joint project management and good partnership between BT and The City of Edinburgh Council.”

Peter Gabbitas, Swift Project Director and Director of Health and Social Care, The City of Edinburgh Council
