Challenge

E.ON generates about 10 percent of the UK’s electricity and is strongly focussed on renewable energy sources, such as wind farms. By definition, wind farms are usually installed at remote sites that are difficult to access. This presents specific challenges to E.ON, as it needs to monitor each individual wind turbine 24*7 to ensure that it is running efficiently.

Solution

E.ON approached BT for an alternative solution to landline broadband to connect to its site in County Durham. BT Media and Broadcast recommended BT Satellite Broadband Enterprise, a service that offers 2Mbps links to the remote site and 1Mbps links from the wind farm back to the E.ON network control centre.

Value

The BT solution has provided E.ON with fast and reliable communications between its network control centre and its wind farm in County Durham. This means that it will be better able to ensure that the volume of energy it supplies meets customer demands, thereby reducing costs and improving business performance.

E.ON is one of the UK’s leading energy suppliers, with about eight million customer accounts for electricity and gas in industrial markets as well as the domestic, small, and medium business markets. The company provides a full range of energyrelated services to all its customers and, under its Central Networks brand, owns and operates the second largest distribution network in the UK.

E.ON generates about 10 percent of the UK’s electricity and is committed to researching new technologies, focusing strongly on renewable energy sources. As well as 10 coal, gas, and oil-fi red power stations, the company also has one of the UK’s leading green generation businesses with 21 operational wind farms and an extensive biomass co-fi ring programme.

“It was always easy to get information from BT about any aspect of the service, and the ability to use BT’s Ipswich laboratories for testing gave us the absolute certainty that we needed.”
