Registers of Scotland (RoS) is the Executive Agency responsible for compiling and maintaining records relating to property and other legal documents in Scotland. Founded in 1617, RoS holds sixteen public registers – the largest of these being the Land Register of Scotland and the General Register of Sasines, both of which relate to rights in property and land. The remainder, although no less important, are smaller and include registers relating to leases, wills, and court actions for debt. As expert registrars, RoS also adopts new registers, and has recently started managing the Register of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and the Register of Community Interests in Land.
RoS handles around 500,000 registration transactions each year. Most of the transactions relate to property transfers and the registering of remortages and secured loans. The department makes information from the registers available to the public and is financed from fees charged for registration and providing information from the registers. RoS has offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, employs around 1,500 people, and has an annual turnover in excess of £80 million.
“We are committed to reducing our reliance on paper-based systems. In doing so, we will not only cut our carbon footprint, but will provide better services to the people of Scotland.”
