Communications at the heart of ChildLine

ChildLine (0800 1111) is a confidential telephone service dedicated to children and young people. The brainchild of journalist and broadcaster Esther Rantzen, it has helped over three million young people since it was set up in 1986. A model for similar child helplines in countries the world over, ChildLine merged with the NSPCC in 2006. Thousands of children call its 14 centres across the UK every day with problems ranging from abuse and bullying to family tensions and teenage pregnancy. Staffed by a network of largely volunteer counsellors it operates around the clock.

BT has been involved with ChildLine from the outset. As well as providing the memorable Freefone number, BT helped the fledgling service with office accommodation and marketing support. BT also assisted with creating the early ChildLine mailing list and developing its donor database. Fast-forward to 2010 and that BT support for ChildLine is still very much in evidence.

Beth Courtier, Community Investment Programme Manager at BT, explains: “We choose to work with charities aligned to what we do, where we can add most value. Communications forms the heart of ChildLine; and communications is our business.” Along with the company’s corporate support, and the technology that underpins the service, BT employees do a vast amount of fundraising each year too. “We take every opportunity to encourage similar engagement from our suppliers and customers,” adds Beth.
