BT Rapid Site Setup

Overview

Speed up remote site operations with 24/7 satellite broadband

Use our satellite broadband service to improve communications with your temporary sites and prevent your remote workers from being isolated from your network while they await a terrestrial connection. With a satellite antenna, you can easily provide broadband connectivity to your short-term locations and move the service from site-to-site at short notice.

Key benefits

Easy, reliable IP connectivity for remote sites

By establishing a satellite broadband connection for your remote workers, BT Rapid Site Setup can help you:

  • Establish working sites more quickly; avoid the cost and time delays to commencing work on site caused by waiting for terrestrial connections.
  • Access “always on” broadband: keep your remote employees connected to your corporate IP applications to improve productivity.
  • Control usage costs: benefit from fixed monthly service prices instead of variable usage based charges.
  • Monitor remote site performance: collect data and exchange market and order information with your remote sites no matter where they are in the UK.
  • Reach isolated locations: use satellite broadband that operates across the UK completely independently of telephone lines or cabling.

The satellite broadband connection can also be used in parallel with a terrestrial connection to provide resilience for mission-critical applications.

Key features

Swiftly establish satellite broadband connectivity

Install broadband IP connectivity quickly at your temporary sites via a small satellite antenna that functions independently of the terrestrial network. At your request, BT can then transfer this broadband connection to follow your temporary sites as required.

BT Rapid Site Setup includes:

Swift implementation: schedule installation even at short notice, typically with just two weeks’ notification.

Portable connection: request the service be moved to different sites as required.

Equipment provision: rent the equipment you need through quarterly payments, rather than buying it outright.

Fixed price plans: predict your temporary site IP connection costs more precisely with flat monthly rates.

24-hour helpdesk: expect high-quality customer service with a target fault response time of less than five working hours.

Connection options: access IP broadband connectivity through a variety of options, such as connections:

  • Over satellite directly to the public Internet.
  • Through a virtual private network (VPN) that connects securely and cost-effectively to your corporate network using the Internet.
  • Via multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) circuit or leased line from the satellite hub to your headquarters, avoiding the public Internet.

Detailed description

Broadband for temporary sites

BT Rapid Site Setup provides your organisation with a broadband Internet connection at your remote sites. This is achieved via a small antenna, completely independent of the terrestrial network. The connection can be used for Web browsing, email and other IP applications.

As part of the Rapid Site Setup service, BT can:

  • Schedule installation at a site with just a couple of weeks’ notice, regardless of whether you need the service there for a few months or a few days.
  • Move your satellite terminal to another site, or into temporary storage, once terrestrial communications become available or work at that location ceases.
  • Deliver an “always on” broadband service that is designed to exceed 99.7 per cent in most locations, boosting efficiency and minimises downtime.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) can be supported via protocols such as Internet protocol security (IPSec) for a secure connection to your corporate network. Alternatively, you can connect directly to your organisation’s corporate network via a dedicated private connection from the satellite network hub, bypassing the public Internet for greater security.

We supply the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) for your remote site. This consists of an indoor unit which provides you with a standard Ethernet interface. This connects via cables to a small satellite antenna, delivering IP connectivity over satellite to the satellite hub.

The satellite hub has high levels of resilience against power failures and is manned 24/7 with expert assistance available on call. From the hub connectivity is provided to the Internet and can support a secure VPN, or alternatively to your dedicated customer backhaul to your headquarters. You are also supported by a -hour, English language BT helpdesk.

Customer premises equipment (CPE)
BT provides the CPE for use at your sites. A 90 cm satellite antenna is installed with a clear view of the southern sky, unobstructed by trees or tall buildings. Exceptionally, some locations may require a larger 1.2 m antenna.

The antenna is connected via a cable (maximum standard length 50 m) to an indoor unit. A power supply is required adjacent to the indoor unit, but no power is required at the antenna position.

The indoor unit provides you with a standard 10/100baseT RJ45 Ethernet interface.

Site services
BT offers support for on-site activities such as installation, recovery and redeployment of equipment to and between sites. Support is tailored to specifically match the needs of construction sites and other organisations that typically require rapid connectivity at new and temporary sites.

Technical specifications

Secure remote access to your corporate network

With BT Rapid Site Setup, your temporary Internet connections across the UK can be tailored to meet your specific requirements. For sites outside this area, other solutions are available.

Satellite broadband speeds
We offer a range of service speeds that can provide download rates comparable to terrestrial broadband. Our peak speeds are:

  • 512 kilobits per second (kbps) outbound (from hub to customer site) with 256 kbps inbound (from customer site to hub)
  • 1,024 kbps outbound with 512 kbps inbound
  • 2,048 kbps outbound with 1,024 kbps inbound

Alternatively you can have a dedicated pool of capacity shared only by your terminals, giving complete control of quality of service.

Virtual private networks (VPNs)
The BT Rapid Site Setup service supports use of virtual private networks (VPNs) using the IP Security (IPSec) protocol. But use of IPSec may prevent traffic being accelerated by the satellite network, resulting in lower throughput speeds. However, Rapid Site Setup can be used in conjunction with BT Gateway VPN to provide end-to-end accelerated VPN tunnels over satellite. This can help maintain a high level of security while avoiding the cost of a dedicated backhaul from the hub to your corporate headquarters.

Dedicated backhaul
Alternatively, if you prefer not to connect via the Internet you can choose instead to interface at the satellite hub to a dedicated backhaul such as a dedicated multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) circuit or a leased line.
