High resilience and full remote management

BT Satellite Broadband Enterprise provides your organisation with a broadband Internet connection at your remote sites. This is achieved via a small antenna, completely independent of the terrestrial network. The connection can be used for Web browsing, email and other IP applications.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) can be supported via protocols such as Internet protocol security (IPSec) for a secure connection to your corporate network. Alternatively, you can connect directly to your organisation’s corporate network via a dedicated private connection from the satellite network hub, bypassing the public Internet for greater security.

We supply the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) for your remote site. This consists of an indoor unit which provides you with a standard Ethernet interface. This connects via cables to a small satellite antenna, delivering IP connectivity over satellite to the satellite hub.

The satellite hub has high levels of resilience against power failures and is manned 24/7 with expert assistance available on call. From the hub connectivity is provided to the Internet and can support a secure VPN, or alternatively to your dedicated customer backhaul to your headquarters. You are also supported by a 24-hour, English-language BT helpdesk.

Meeting the individual needs of your remote sites

BT Satellite Broadband Enterprise covers the UK and Europe and offers asymmetric, contended Internet protocol (IP) access to your remote sites. For sites outside these areas other solutions are available.

Satellite broadband speeds

We offer a range of service speeds. Peak speeds are:

• 512 kilobits per second (kbps) outbound (from hub to your site) with 256 kbps inbound (from your site to hub)
• 1024 kbps outbound with 512 kbps inbound
• 2048 kbps outbound with 1024 kbps inbound

Alternatively you can have a dedicated pool of capacity shared only by your terminals, giving complete control of quality of service.

Virtual private networks (VPNs)

The BT Satellite Broadband Enterprise service supports use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using the IP Security (IPSec) protocol. Note however that use of IPSec will mean traffic cannot be accelerated by the satellite network, which will normally result in lower throughput speeds. However BT’s Gateway VPN product can be combined with this service to provide fully end-to-end accelerated VPN tunnels over satellite while maintaining a high level of customer security – yet avoiding the cost of a dedicated backhaul from the hub to your corporate headquarters.

Dedicated backhaul

Alternatively if you prefer not to connect via the Internet you can choose instead to interface at the satellite hub to a dedicated backhaul such as a multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) circuit or a leased line.

Customer premises equipment (CPE)

BT supplies and installs the remote site Customer premises equipment (CPE). A 90 cm satellite antenna is provided for most sites in Western Europe. This needs a clear view of the southern sky, unobstructed by trees or tall buildings. Exceptionally, some locations may require a larger 1.2 m antenna.

The antenna is connected via cables (maximum standard length 50 m) to an indoor unit. A power supply is required adjacent to the indoor unit, but no power is required at the antenna position. The indoor unit provides you with a standard 10/100baseT RJ45 Ethernet interface.
