BT Diamond IP White Papers
Learn about core DHCP, DNS, and IPAM (DDI) technologies to deepen your understanding and to improve your network operations and security. Turn your knowledge into action with the help of BT Diamond IP solutions to help you better manage your IPv4-IPv6 address space, simplify your DDI processes, streamline DDI functions for your cloud deployments and secure your network with DNS security.
IP Address Management (IPAM) Best Practices
This white paper discusses the fundamentals of successful IPAM, aka DDI, which provides a solid foundation for further IT or Operation automation in support of advanced IP services management. These fundamentals, or “best practices,” are derived from numerous implementations of IP management systems over the last 20 years, as well as from interactions with end users and industry analysts, by the BT Diamond IP leadership team.
Cloud Automation of Core Network Services
This white paper discusses the foundational elements for managing cloud DDI infrastructure, namely the management of IP addresses and domain name system (DNS) elements in a dynamic cloud environment. These core network services facilitate the initialisation of critical network layer configuration which when automated, are indispensable to achieving rapid elasticity.
DNS Security Strategies
This white paper describes various forms of enterprise DNS attacks and strategies you can employ to mitigate these attacks. We’ll start with a basic overview of DNS to establish a level set and present potential vulnerabilities, which we’ll discuss next, followed by mitigation strategies that can be deployed to reduce exposure to various attack types.
IPv6 Address Planning
This paper discusses key considerations and techniques for defining your IPv6 address plan, a critical ingredient of your overall IPv6 deployment plan. Take the time to carefully consider your IPv6 address structure and strategy to develop an address plan to facilitate your IPv6 deployment and management of your network in ongoing steady state.
DNS Firewall Deployment Strategies
This white paper summarises basic deployment models for DNS firewall technology, which provides the ability to block certain DNS queries to known bad actor domains. DNS firewall technology enables enterprises and service providers to reduce the probability of malware proliferation within their networks. It also enables service providers to offer incremental revenue features such as parental controls and related domain blocking, whilst enabling compliance with domain or end user blocks imposed by law enforcement.
IPv6 Addressing and Management Challenges
This white paper is intended to help you learn about IPv6. It provides an overview of the key benefits of IPv6, then delves into the details of IPv6 addressing and address allocation, IPv6 address assignment strategies using autoconfiguration or DHCPv6, and the key IP management challenges related to IPv6.
Securing Domain Name Resolution with DNSSEC
DNS security extensions, DNSSEC, provide a means to authenticate the origin of resolution data within DNS and to verify the integrity of that data. It enables resolvers to validate that the resolution data received for a given zone was indeed published by the corresponding zone administrator and was not tampered with en route. This white paper provides a high level overview of how DNSSEC works and the basic administrative requirements for configuring and managing DNSSEC configurations.
Applying ITIL® Best Practice Principles to IPAM
Effective application of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices, organisations can bring this important and potent discipline to the management of IP addresses. This white paper explains how each of the main ITIL areas can be applied specifically to IP address management (IPAM), and the benefits that can be accrued from using this management framework.
DNS Anycast for High Availability and Performance
The term anycast refers to an IP address assigned to a set of interfaces (usually belonging to different nodes), any one of which can be the intended recipient. Use of anycast addresses with dynamic routing on DNS servers can provide higher resolution performance as well as DNS server redundancy. This white paper shows how DNS servers can be deployed with anycast to achieve a number of benefits, including higher availability and resilience.
Introduction to International Domain Names for Applications (IDNA)
DNS resolvers and servers communicate hostname queries and responses in ASCII-formatted messages. Unfortunately, whilst ASCII characters have been defined to effectively represent the English language, they do not enable formatting of characters from other languages, particularly those using a non-Latin based alphabet. The Internationalising Domain Names in Applications (IDNA) specifications address this limitation, and this white paper describes how IDNA works and ways you can simplify IDNA implementation.
Previously, getting a new IP address issued required cooperation from five separate groups of people, taking up to four days. With IPControl, such a change can be achieved by one individual in just four minutes.”
