Overview

High Security network access for your remote sites

Connect your remote and temporary sites with high security to your corporate network though virtual private network (VPN) tunnels over satellite and the public Internet. Used in combination with BT Satellite Access services, BT Gateway VPN provides highly cost-effective accelerated VPN tunnels over satellite between remote sites and your data centre whilst maintaining a high level of customer security.

Key benefits

Connect remote locations with high security to your network

When used in conjunction with a BT-provided satellite connection, BT Gateway VPN provides high security links between your remote offices and your data centre. By providing access to your corporate headquarters via virtual private network (VPN) tunnels over satellite and public Internet, BT Gateway VPN enables you to:

  • Ensure a high security connection: provide "always on" remote access to your corporate data centre without compromising your network's integrity.
  • Avoid degrading connection speeds: enable secure connectivity using an end-to-end Internet Protocol security (IPSec) VPN without compromising throughput speeds.
  • Maintain security and reduce complexity: ensure network security while BT delivers 24/7 helpdesk support and full management of the end-to-end service.

Key features

Enable remote access without compromising security

Gateway VPN is a managed BT service that provides high security links between your remote, mobile and temporary satellite broadband sites and your corporate network. It works in combination with a BT Satellite Access service to deliver broadband connectivity via the public Internet and secure virtual private network (VPN) tunnels.
Gateway VPN enables you to enjoy the benefits of using satellite connections to gain access to remote locations as well as helping you to:

  • Minimise remote access costs: connect multiple remote offices over satellite and internet to your network, avoiding the cost of dedicated terrestrial connectivity to the satellite hub.
  • Protect your data: maintain network security with end-to-end data encryption.

Functionally it includes the IP Security (IPSec) VPN encryption protocol and an in-built IP accelerator. Conventional IPSec VPNs operated over satellite links usually cause throughput speed reductions due to the interaction of the transmission control protocol / IP (TCP/IP) protocol with the satellite round trip delay. However, BT Gateway VPN overcomes this problem so you can:

  • Make the most of satellite capacity: avoid the degradation to throughput speeds caused by other VPN solutions.
  • Maintain or improve response times for end-users: avoid the need for constant transmission of commonly-used web pages with caching, while hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) pre-fetch anticipates users requirements.

Gateway VPN can also help you:

  • Connect multiple sites easily: link multiple remote, temporary and mobile offices to your network with Gateways that can support up to 50 sites each, depending on the Gateway options selected.

Detailed description

Bring your remote offices out of isolation

Working in conjunction with a BT satellite connection, BT Gateway VPN provides high security links to connect your remote sites via satellite to your corporate network using accelerated VPN tunnels. This ensures high levels of security of your data without compromising on connection speeds.

From an Ethernet interface on the Gateway unit at each remote site, your data is first accelerated before being encrypted to form a VPN tunnel. It is then passed with high security over the satellite and via the Internet to your data centre and to a hub Gateway unit.

As part of the Gateway VPN managed service, BT will:

  • Design and implement secure VPN access to your network, with the expertise of our IP over satellite specialists.
  • Supply a hub Gateway unit for installation, ideally, in a demilitarised zone (DMZ) at your data centre.
  • Install a Gateway unit at each remote site.
  • Manage all the Gateway units.
  • Provide a 24-hour English language customer helpdesk for quick response to any faults.

The BT-managed Gateway VPN service supports all our standard satellite service speeds and is designed to match the availability of your satellite link.

Customise your service
At additional cost, BT can tailor aspects of Gateway VPN to meet your specific requirements, such as:

  • Providing customised quality of service (QoS) settings to prioritise applications and optimise performance.
  • Installing multiple VPN tunnels at each site.

Technical specifications

Increase security without degrading throughput speeds

Together with a BT-provided satellite connection, Gateway VPN can provide a high security network access for your remote and temporary sites.

Key features of BT Gateway VPN include:

  • High security end-to-end IPSec ESP tunnel mode, using 128bits encryption with authentication as standard and optional 168 or 256bits encryption.
  • Two-way TCP accelerator and HTTP pre-fetch.
  • HTTP and domain name server (DNS) cache for optimum performance.
  • Dynamic host configuration protocols (DHCP) server with network address translation (NAT) and port forwarding, and optional DHCP forwarding to your corporate headquarters.
  • IP Header Compression.
  • Lossless IP Data Compression.
  • Stateful firewall at remote sites.
  • Standard 10/100 Base T Ethernet RJ45 interfaces.

Why do we use an accelerator?

The use of satellite results in an unavoidable round trip delay. This is due to the time taken for transmissions to pass from the user to the satellite – 36,000 km from Earth – and back to the hub. Although these transmissions travel at the speed of light, the resulting one-way delay is approximately 250 milliseconds. This delay has the effect of slowing down TCP-IP protocols and restricting throughput rates.

Satellite networks usually have an integral accelerator function which uses "spoofing" to make more effective use of the available bandwidth and provide faster throughput.

Using IPSec encryption, whether for security or as a VPN tunnel through the Internet instead of a dedicated backhaul, the IPSec encryption hides the IP addressing. Consequently, this prevents the accelerator in the satellite system from functioning.

BT Gateway VPN provides end-to-end VPN encryption, but delivers the acceleration function prior to encryption to enable throughput speeds similar to those achieved without IPSec encryption.
