Head of Security and BT Advise, Middle East and Africa, BT Global Services
Tareque has a dual role; as Head of BT Advise MEA he is responsible for BT’s professional services unit across the Middle East and Africa. He is recognized as having expertise in the development of security and risk management strategies and in leading teams to deliver security transformation programs.
As BT’s Head of Security, Tareque has accountability for all aspects of operational risk including information security, people, physical assets as well as business continuity for BT across the Middle East and Africa.
Tareque’s expertise has been gained over more than 18 years’ experience in the ICT space with 15 years focused on information security.
Tareque is adept at building the critical links and relationships between business divisions or goals and technical teams. He excels at identifying pragmatic solutions to security challenges and delivering on the vision to realise rapid improvements in security postures.
Whilst he can be relied upon to respond in a crisis situation, Tareque is more focused on partnering with clients to proactively address risk; taking a holistic approach to security across structures, skills, processes and systems. Tareque started off his career at IBM Canada before he moved on to AT&T Canada where he made the transition from ICT broadly to security while deploying firewalls and VPNs as part of an NGO project.
Immediately prior to joining BT, Tareque was the Country Manager for Secure Computing, a leader in the gateway security space where he ran their UAE operations. Prior to Secure Computing Tareque was Technical Director for EMEA at CyberGuard, a leading Firewall and VPN organisation where he was responsible for all technical consulting across the EMEA region.
Speaking alongside security experts such as Jeff Moss, Head of Blackhat, and Bruce Schneier, renowned security expert, Tareque is a sought after thought leader in the information security space.
Tareque presents on an invitational basis at an average of four conferences a year where he is consistently rated as one of the top speakers.
Specifically, he has presented at IDC’s European Security Conference for five consecutive years, was an invited expert focusing on Hactivism and the Anonymous phenomenon at CISO Middle East and was featured at the ITU summit in Dubai in 2012.
During his career, Tareque has published many articles for SC Magazine, Security Advisor and Network World. He has also appeared on Dubai Eye Business Breakfast. He has a Masters of Science degree in Information Security and qualified as a CISSP in 2001.
Prior to moving to the Middle East Tareque was a part-time lecturer at The University of Westminster where he advised on the development of the Masters curriculum to ensure industry relevance and lectured on Firewall and VPN technologies.
In his spare time Tareque is an active community member having launched an online information exchange for expats based in Dubai. Tareque also enjoys playing competitive football and is an avid sports fan all together.
