You just bought a brand new sports car. All you want to do is get on the track and drive it — fast. There’s only one problem: you don’t have a car key.
Making something go faster, while at the same time making it secure can sometimes be counterproductive. It’s the same with optimisation and encryption in the Cloud: making data secure means you have to decrypt it first in order to optimise.
Optimisation — driving fast.
Optimisation allows you to carry more data on your existing infrastructure. It can be the difference between taking 20 seconds and 20 minutes to download a file.
An optimised cloud service can save you precious time when you’re downloading data and files. It’s the equivalent of having a car with a souped-up engine. But, as always, there’s a catch.
Encryption — locking the door.
That catch is encryption. (It’s the problem of how to keep your sports car safe from opportunistic thieves.) With internet and cloud security a serious concern, end-to-end encryption of data traffic is on the increase. To keep content secure, websites are increasingly using HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure — emphasis on the ‘secure’).
Encryption technology like SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) also allows private information to be shared between web servers and visitors’ web browsers. It keeps this information private, and, at the same time, prevents data tampering and message fraud.
It’s like owning a car with a really, (really) complicated locking system.
The problem encryption poses for optimisation is that many current optimisation platforms can’t see encrypted content, so their processes aren’t effective. And with major websites like YouTube, Facebook and WordPress all using HTTPS, this is a significant issue.
So it really is like you don’t have the car keys. It’s secure, it’s speedy, but it’s not going anywhere. To complicate the issue, you don’t want the car to be easily accessible, you need a way to get inside without compromising its locking system.
A spare key.
