At BT, we’re working with our supply chain to meet carbon-emissions targets and create a sustainable, environmentally-friendly future for communications.

As many sun-worshippers in the UK are aware, this summer has been a hot one. However, that’s not the whole story. Yes there have been soaring temperatures, but these are often followed by periods of cold, wind and rain. It’s a stark reminder of changing weather patterns, and our need to take better care of our planet by tackling climate change.

BT’s pathway to a better world.

We’re committed to using the power of communications to build a better world, and part of this is taking steps to protect the environment. One of these steps is working with our supply chain to reduce the overall carbon emissions of our operations.

To do this, we established the Better Future Supplier Forum (BFSF) in 2012, which promotes collaboration, innovation and sustainability practices — including carbon reduction. From this, we’re working with our suppliers to develop and implement a Sustainability Assessor tool — designed to help organisations understand and meet environmental targets.

The tool lets you explore the business benefits of sustainability and benchmark your organisation against best practice. You can also track your progress on the journey to becoming environmentally friendly and access personalised recommendations on ways to make your business more sustainable.

Plus, it helps you to innovate and engage with environmental sustainability — providing you with effective ways to futureproof your business. Many of the organisations taking part in the BSFS have already benefitted from using the principles of the Sustainability Assessor tool.

One found that by redesigning its Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology (DECT) handsets to meet eco principles, it could cut carbon emissions by 30 per cent and reduce product cost by a fifth.
 While another moved its manufacturing facility to a cleaner energy source — powering the air conditioning and generating power with waste heat. This provided a more secure energy supply and reduced both the carbon footprint and price paid for electricity by 40 per cent.

Additionally, in 2015, three suppliers in the BSFS together saved 250,000 tons of CO2 and $13 million through sustainability initiatives.
