Smart Metering Key Infrastructure

BT’s Smart Meter Key Infrastructure Service for National Roll-Out

smart-meterThe Smart Meter network roll-out aims to install smart meters in every home in England, Wales and Scotland.

This smart meter network will transform how energy is supplied and give consumers greater control over their energy use.

By 2020, 53 million smart meters are expected to be fitted in homes and small non domestic properties across Great Britain. Smart meters will enable consumers to track their spending on their energy use by receiving accurate rather than estimated readings.

The Data and Communications Company (DCC), which is building and will run the infrastructure necessary to support the roll out, has awarded BT the contract to deliver the Smart Meter Key Infrastructure service required to support the smart metering network.

BT’s Smart Meter Key Infrastructure will provide a high performance security service with the flexibility and scalability to meet the requirements of the national rollout.

Providing a high performing security service

  • The service is a Public Key Infrastructure service that will issue x.509 digital certificates to ensure the authenticity, integrity, and non-repudiation of communications and data passing between the smart meters and the business systems of energy suppliers, network operators and other authorised service users.
  • The service is being scaled to be capable of issuing 1 million digital certificates each day and is expected to issue over 400 million digital certificates over the life of the contract making it one of the largest single PKI deployments anywhere in the world.
  • The contract was signed in April 2014 and will run for seven years.
  • BT has over 15 years’ experience of providing managed PKI solutions to customers and is currently also delivering a PKI solution to support a smart metering programme in Belgium.
