Key benefits

Mobility can drive your competitive advantage

BT Satellite Broadband Mobile can offer your organisation a number of benefits:

  • Vehicle-mounted satellite connection means you are truly mobile and can establish IP connectivity quickly and easily after parking.
  • Your vehicle-based teams are no longer constrained by a lack of communications and can operate virtually anywhere in the UK and Ireland.
  • Employees can work together more effectively, regardless of location – reducing costs and boosting productivity.
  • Parked vehicles are connected to your organisation’s network, so you can use the same applications as at fixed sites.
  • The ability to roll out customer applications rapidly and easily can boost your competitive advantage.

UK financial services group Alliance & Leicester chose our vehicle-mounted satellite broadband to equip a mobile branch while it refurbished its shop network. This provided:

  • Uninterrupted customer service and support even while branches were closed for refurbishment.
  • Secure connectivity at rates up to 2Mbps from any UK location.
  • Full access to Alliance & Leicester’s corporate network for mobile branch staff and ATM deposit services for customers.

Key features

A channel for greater mobility

BT Satellite Broadband Mobile equips your vehicles with IP connectivity with a range of options to match your needs:

  • Speed: a choice of service peak speeds and the option of a pool of dedicated bandwidth dedicated to your sites both help optimise service levels against your needs.
  • Connectivity options: connecting either to the Internet or via an optional secure VPN tunnel over the internet into your private network helps minimise costs or maximise security according to your needs.
  • High availability: designed to exceed 99.5 per cent in most locations, boosts efficiency and minimises downtime.
  • Remote management: BT can change your service speeds according to your needs without costly, time-consuming intervention at remote sites.
  • Fixed pricing: the connection is “always-on,” with no dial-up or per-minute charges. The monthly service price means predictable costs.
  • Convenience: the self-deploying antenna makes accessing the Internet or corporate network easy – any time, anywhere.

Detailed description

Self-deployment offers ease of use

BT Satellite Broadband Mobile provides your organisation with a vehicle-mounted broadband IP connection. This is achieved via a small self-deploying motorised antenna, antenna controller, and satellite modem. The connection can be used for web browsing, email and other Internet Protocol (IP) applications.

Virtual private networks (VPNs) can be supported via protocols such as Internet Protocol security (IPSec) for secure connection to your corporate network. Alternatively, you can connect directly to your organisation’s corporate network via a dedicated private connection from the satellite network hub, bypassing the public Internet for even greater security.

The satellite modem functions as a router and provides an Ethernet interface, delivering IP connectivity over the satellite back to the satellite hub which has high levels of resilience against power failures and other issues and is manned 24/7 with expert assistance available on call.

Connectivity is provided from here to the Internet or to a customer-dedicated backhaul such as a leased line or multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) circuit.

Technical specifications

Take your network with you

BT Satellite Broadband Mobile offers vehicle-mounted asymmetric, contended Internet Protocol (IP) access to vehicles parked almost anywhere in the UK and Ireland, giving your business increased mobility.

Satellite broadband speeds

We offer a range of service speed, with peak speeds typically in the range of 256-2048kbps.

Alternatively you can have a dedicated pool of capacity shared only by your terminals, giving complete control of quality of service.

Virtual private networks (VPNs)

BT Satellite Broadband Mobile supports use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using the IP Security (IPSec) protocol. Note however that use of IPSec encryption will mean traffic cannot be accelerated in the usual way by the satellite network and this will normally result in lower throughput speeds. However BT’s GatewayVPN product can be combined with this service to provide fully end-to-end accelerated VPN tunnels over satellite whilst maintaining a high level of customer security, yet avoiding the cost of a dedicated backhaul from the hub to your corporate headquarters.

Dedicated backhaul

Alternatively if you prefer not to connect via the Internet you can choose instead to interface at the satellite hub to a dedicated backhaul such as a multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) circuit or a leased line.

Customer equipment

BT provides the satellite equipment required including a self-deploying motorised 75 or 90 cm satellite antenna, which needs a clear view of the southern sky, unobstructed by trees or tall buildings to lock onto the network. Exceptionally, some locations may require a larger 1.2 m antenna. A self-deploying motorised antenna mount and controller and a satellite modem unit are also supplied.

The system can be powered from the vehicle battery – via an inverter – or from a separate battery/inverter, or from an external 230-volt mains power supply where available.
